ID photo requirements in USA

In different countries, the requirements for photo documents differ. You need to read them carefully, because even in one country, different requirements for a photo are different for different documents. Webappium tried to study these parameters and help make it as easy as possible to create a photo of the desired size and provide a link to the current requirements. You can also choose the size of the paper on which you plan to print the photo.

  • Size: The correct size of a passport photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
  • General requirements: The head should be (25 - 35 mm) from chin to crown with a neutral facial expression and open eyes. The person must look directly into the camera. Use photos without filters. Photos with damage, scratches and holes will not be accepted. The photo must have been taken by someone else. Selfies don't fit. Photos in uniform or similar clothing or camouflage will not be accepted. Photos must be taken in casual clothes. Do not wear headphones or other wireless devices. You can be photographed in jewelry and piercings if they do not hide your face. Permanent tattoos are also allowed.
  • Eyeglasses: Glasses are not allowed, even if you wear them every day.
  • Head coverings: Head covering is allowed for religious or medical reasons. For a religious reason, a signed document must be provided, which confirms that the head covering in the photo is part of religious clothing and is worn daily. If the head covering is worn for medical reasons, a signed document from the doctor must be provided that the head coverings is worn daily for medical reasons. In these cases, the head coverings must not cover and/or cast shadows on the face.
  • Background: Use a solid white or off-white background, with no shadows.
  • Children: There should not be other people in the frame. The child should look into the camera with open eyes.
  • Submit a color recent photo, taken within 6 months.

  • Size: Photo size must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
  • General requirements: The head should be (25 - 35 mm) from chin to crown. The photo must be in color. The face must be fully included in the photo. You need to look straight ahead, with a natural expression and open eyes. Take pictures in clothes that you wear every day. Uniforms should not be used in the photo, with the exception of religious clothing that is worn on a daily basis. The photo must not include headphones, wireless devices, or similar devices. Photos with hearing aids are allowed.
  • Eyeglasses: Glasses are no longer allowed in visa photos, unless glasses cannot be removed for medical reasons, in which case a signed medical certificate must be provided. If glasses are allowed for medical reasons:
    • The frame of the glasses should not cover the eyes.
    • There should be no glare on glasses that cover the eyes.
    • There should be no shadow or refraction from glasses that cover the eyes.
  • Head coverings: Do not wear head covering that hides the hair or hairline, with the exception of religious head coverings which are worn daily. Your face must be fully visible, and the shadow of the head covering must not fall on your face.
  • Background: Use a white background.
  • Submit a recent photo, taken within 6 months.
