In Brazil the authority almost always takes the photo itself: the identity card post, the Federal Police and Detran photograph you on the spot. A photo of your own is needed only in a few cases:

  • Identity card (CIN)
  • Passport
  • Migrant registration card (CRNM)
  • Driving licence (CNH)

  • Who takes the photo: The photo is taken at the moment of service, so you do not need to bring one. The CIN is issued by each state's identification post, and Espírito Santo's page also asks applicants to wear dark clothing — a vest is offered to anyone dressed in light colours.
  • When you bring one: For children aged 0 to 3: bring a 3 x 4 photo in the format the issuing body sets.
  • Rules are set by each state, so check your state's identification service before the appointment.

  • Who takes the photo: Biometric data — the facial photograph and fingerprints — are collected in the service booth at the Federal Police, so adults and children from 5 do not bring a photo.
  • Children under 5: Must bring a recent 5 x 7 photo with a white background, and the child still has to attend the appointment.
  • Rejected photos: A photo is refused if accessories, decorations or ornaments partly cover the child's face, if it no longer identifies the child because too much time has passed, or if the eyes are closed — unless the applicant is a newborn.

  • Who takes the photo: Registering as a foreign resident includes collecting your biometric data at the Federal Police, the photo included.
  • When you bring one: Only if the Federal Police's biometric collection system is unavailable, one recent 3 x 4 photo may be requested: in colour, with a white background, on smooth paper, taken from the front.

Photo for a Brazilian driving licence (CNH)

  • Who takes the photo: Detran takes it. The biometric collection — photo, signature and fingerprints — is required for a first licence; a photo of your own is not accepted.
  • Rules for the photo: No glasses, caps, beanies, hats or anything covering part of the face or head. The face must be fully visible, not tilted, looking straight ahead.
  • Renewal: Detran-SP reuses a biometric collection already made for another licence service. To update your photo or signature, say so at the counter and a new collection is made.
