Photo for a UK passport

  • Source: Government of the United Kingdom
  • Size: The photo must be 45 millimetres (mm) high by 35 mm wide (the standard size used in photo booths in the UK).
  • General requirements: The image of you — from the crown of your head to your chin — must be between 29 mm and 34 mm high. Your photo must be clear and in focus, in colour on plain white photographic paper with no border, without any creases or tears, unmarked on both sides (unless a photo needs to be countersigned) and unaltered by computer software. Your photo must be a close-up of your full head and upper shoulders, contain no other objects or people, be facing forwards and looking straight at the camera, have a plain expression with your mouth closed, have nothing covering your face, and have no shadows on your face or behind you.
  • Head coverings: Hats or other head coverings are only allowed if worn for religious reasons and if they do not obscure any facial features.
  • Eyeglasses: Do not wear glasses in your photo unless you have to do so. If you must wear glasses, they cannot be sunglasses or tinted glasses, and you must make sure your eyes are not covered by the frames or any glare, reflection or shadow.
  • Children: Children must be on their own in the picture. Babies must not be holding toys or using dummies. Children under 6 do not have to be looking directly at the camera or have a plain expression. Children under one do not have to have their eyes open. You can support their head with your hand, but your hand must not be visible in the photo.
  • Background: Your photo must be taken against a plain cream or light grey background, and you must be in clear contrast to it.
  • Paper application: You need 2 identical printed photos. They must be printed to a professional standard (for example at a photo lab), not cut down from a larger picture, with no red eye and no hair in front of your eyes.
  • Applying online: Online you need a digital photo instead: get a photo code from a photo booth or shop, or have someone take your photo on your own device during the application. gov.uk says photos from a booth or shop are more likely to be approved. A photo taken on your own device shows your head, shoulders and upper body, uncropped — the service crops it.
  • The generator's print sheet is for the paper form — print it at a photo lab.

  • Source: UK Visas and Immigration, taking a photo of your face
  • Visa: Your photo is taken with your fingerprints at the visa application centre, or in the UK Immigration: ID Check app if you are told you can use it, so you do not bring a printed photo. Children under 5 also go to the appointment to have a photograph taken.
  • ETA and online applications: For an electronic travel authorisation (ETA), and wherever an application asks you to upload a photo of your face, the photo follows UKVI's rules for digital photos.
  • File: A JPG or JPEG file, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 6 MB, vertical, not mirrored or flipped.
  • What it shows: Your head, shoulders and upper body against a plain light-coloured background, in clear contrast to it, with no other objects or people. It must not be a scan or photo of another photo, nor the same photo as in your passport or identity card.
  • Face: Facing the camera with a plain expression and your mouth closed, eyes open and visible, no hair over your eyes, no shadows on your face or behind you, no head covering unless for religious or medical reasons, and shoulders and torso clothed. Wear glasses only if you have to, never sunglasses or tinted lenses. Take it in a well-lit room — ideally have another person take it.
  • Children: Children must be on their own in the photo, and babies must not hold toys or use dummies. Children under 6 need not look straight at the camera or have a plain expression, and children under one need not have their eyes open. A baby under one lies on a plain light-coloured sheet and is photographed from above.
  • The generator makes a 900 × 1125 px JPEG framed wider than a passport photo, with your head, shoulders and upper body.
