In Ireland you bring your own photo for a passport and for a visa. For the driving licence the NDLS takes it:

  • Applying online: You need a digital photo for a Passport Book or Passport Card online. It can be taken at home on a smartphone, tablet or camera — by someone else, not as a selfie, and without the zoom — then transferred to your computer and uploaded. You can also get one from a photo shop or from a participating photo booth with a photo code.
  • File: A colour JPEG, at least 715 pixels wide and 951 pixels tall, no larger than 9 MB; not scanned, without compression artefacts, not digitally enhanced or changed.
  • Paper application: 4 identical photos, no more than 6 months old. Your witness writes the form number on the back of two of them and signs and stamps them.
  • Size and paper: Minimum 35 × 45 mm, maximum 38 × 50 mm, printed on photo-quality paper at a high resolution, with a white, unglazed back. Black and white photos are recommended, as the passport photo is printed in black and white, but colour is accepted.
  • Framing: The photo captures you from head to mid torso, with visible space between your head and shoulders and the edge of the photo.
  • Background: Completely plain light grey, white or cream, with enough contrast; no objects behind you and no shadows on your face or behind your head.
  • Face: Neutral expression, mouth closed, no smile, head not tilted, looking straight into the camera, hair not covering the eyes. Glasses are allowed if the frame does not cover your eyes and there is no glare; dark glasses are not. A head covering only for religious or medical reasons, with your full face visible. No uniforms or insignia.
  • Children: An infant who cannot support themselves is photographed lying on a plain white surface. No hands or arms holding the child may be visible, and no soothers.
  • The photo must have been taken in the last six months. The generator frames you from head to mid torso, with space around your head and shoulders.

  • Size: Two identical photos, 45–50 mm high and 35–38 mm wide, showing a close-up of your face and the top of your shoulders. Your face takes up 70–80% of the photo.
  • Age and paper: Less than 6 months old, printed on photographic paper, with a white, unglazed back.
  • Image: In colour, against a plain white or light grey background; sharp, correctly exposed, with natural skin tones, no red eye and no shadows or glare.
  • Pose: Head centred, looking directly at the camera, not tilted or turned; neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed, no hair over the eyes. No sunglasses or tinted glasses. No hat, cap or head-band; a religious head covering only if your face is clearly visible.
  • Preparing the photos: On the back of each photo write your name and your visa application/transaction number in block capitals. Put the photos in the envelope with the form — do not staple or attach them.

  • Who takes the photo: The NDLS captures your photograph and signature electronically at its centre when you apply in person, so you do not bring a printed photo.
  • Applying online: Online applications use the photo on your Public Services Card. If that photo is over 10 years old, you cannot apply online: renew the card on MyWelfare.ie, uploading a recent digital photo, or book an appointment at an NDLS centre.
