Photograph for a Kazakhstan ID card or passport

    45 mm
    35 mm
    • Source: Order No. 267 of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Annex 2
    • Who takes the photo: At a Government for Citizens office (CSC) you are photographed on the spot, free of charge. Printed 3.5 × 4.5 cm photos — two of them — are needed only when the application is made on a paper form.
    • Size: The photograph size should be as follows: height 45 mm, width 35 mm. The photo should clearly show the facial features from the lowest point of the chin up to the crown of the head, and from the far-left edge of the face to the far-right one. The face should occupy 70–80% of the photograph, which is 32–36 mm from the lowest point of the chin to the crown of the head.
    • General requirements: The photograph should be high-contrast and vivid. All facial features should be depicted clearly. When taking the photograph, the face should be evenly lit. Avoid lightening or darkening of certain areas of a face, as well as the effect of red eyes. Illumination should be in natural colour; colour such as blue or red is not allowed.
    • Photo quality: A photo (especially when taken with a digital camera) should be printed (in case of being printed on a paper sheet) on high-quality matte paper with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. The photo should have neutral colours and convey a natural skin tone. There should be no bends, dirt or scratches on a photo. Art retouching and other manipulations are not allowed. The lens should be a short telephoto lens with an equivalent focal length of 90–130 mm.
    • Head size and Orientation: No head tilts or turns are allowed (for example, a half-profile photo). The person should look straight into the camera with a neutral expression and a closed mouth, and should not squint or stare wide-eyed. The picture is taken from the front, not from above, below or the side. Eyes should be open and clearly visible. They should not be hidden by hair.
    • Head coverings: No headwear is allowed when taking photographs. An exception is only allowed if the headwear is part of religious beliefs. In this case, the face should be uncovered from the lower chin line up to the forehead. Shadows from headwear are not allowed.
    • Eyeglasses: Eyes should be clearly visible. No light reflections or sunglasses are allowed. An exception is made only for glasses worn for medical reasons. The frame should not hide the eyes.
    • Background: The background should be plain and light; a grey background is recommended, and a blue one is not. The face and hair should contrast with the background and stand out clearly from it. If the person has light hair, the background should be medium grey; if the hair is dark, light grey. No drawings and patterns are allowed on the background. The photo should show only the person being photographed (no other people or objects are allowed). There should also be no shadows.
    • Children: The face should occupy 50–80% of the photograph, i.e. 22–36 mm from the lowest point of the chin to the crown of the head; if the child has thick hair, make sure the distance from the lowest point of the chin to the crown still meets the requirements; if the top of the head is hard to determine, a height of no less than 17 mm and no more than 40 mm is allowed. For children under 6, deviations from the general rules are allowed regarding the position of the head (the requirements for the frontal position of the head and shoulders remain valid), countenance, eyes, direction of gaze, as well as regarding the location of a face in the center of a photo.
    • Submit a recent photo, taken within 6 months.
