Italian document photos follow the ICAO passport format, 35 x 45 mm in colour, but each document has its own source and details: the passport and the electronic ID card (CIE) share one set of rules, the driving licence has its own ministry circular, and visas and residence permits are handled by consulates and police headquarters.

- Size: 35 x 45 mm, in colour, printed on high-quality, high-definition paper. The face covers 70-80% of the photo, from the bottom of the chin to the forehead.
- Background: White, with uniform lighting; no flash reflections on the face and no red eyes.
- Pose: Neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at the camera; the face centred, not in profile, and nobody and nothing else in the photo.
- Glasses: Preferably take them off. If you keep them: no sunglasses or tinted lenses, no flash reflections, only light frames or rimless, and the frame must not cover any part of the eyes.
- Head coverings: Not allowed unless for religious reasons; then the outline of the face from the chin to the forehead and both sides of the face must be clearly visible.
- In Buenos Aires: The Consulate General in Buenos Aires asks for 2 identical photos no more than 6 months old, printed (not digital), in colour, on a white background, showing the face from the front at medium distance with the eyebrows uncovered, a neutral expression and the mouth closed. You hand them in at the appointment where your fingerprints are taken and the passport is collected. The consulate's list gives the format as 35 x 40 mm rather than the ministry's 35 x 45 mm, so ask the consulate if in doubt.
- The photo must be recent: not more than 6 months old.

- How it is handed in: Bring one printed photo to the town hall (Comune), unless you booked through Agenda CIE and uploaded it there in digital form. It must be in the same format as the passport photo.
- Size: 35 mm wide and at least 45 mm high. The face takes up 70-80% of the photo height, centred, with the eyes 23-31 mm above the bottom edge. Do not crop the photo to remove the background or straighten the head.
- Background: Uniform and evenly lit, preferably light blue, beige, light brown, light grey or white, without shadows.
- General requirements: Colour with natural tones, sharp focus, neutral expression with the mouth closed and the eyes open, the face frontal and not tilted, no retouching. Glasses only with clear, untinted lenses; head coverings only for religious, cultural or medical reasons, with the face clearly shown.
- The photo must be recent, not taken more than 6 months ago, and not folded, stapled or written on.

- When it is needed: For a renewal, the authorised doctor asks for a recent passport-style photo and legalises it. For a duplicate at the Motorizzazione, you hand in two identical photos on a white background, bare-headed and on non-thermal paper, attached to form TT2112.
- Size: 40-45 mm high by 32-35 mm wide, in colour. The head is 28-32 mm tall (60-90% of the photo height); head and top of the shoulders fully visible.
- Background: Uniform, preferably light grey, cream, light blue or white, without shadows on the face or the background.
- General requirements: Frontal, looking at the lens, the head centred and not tilted, neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and not covered by hair, no red eyes. Glasses only with clear lenses and a frame that does not cover the eyes; head coverings only for religious reasons, with the face clearly shown. Matte photo paper is recommended.
- The photo must be no more than 6 months old; if you hand in more than one, they must be identical.

- Size: Each consulate publishes its own checklist. The Embassy in Cairo, for example, asks for one recent passport-style photo with a light background in ICAO format and writes the size as 35 x 40 mm; the generator uses the ICAO 35 x 45 mm.
- Background: Light-coloured and plain.

- How many: 4 passport-style photos, identical and recent. With the postal kit they are not posted but brought to the appointment at the police headquarters (Questura); the Questura of Treviso, for example, also asks for 4 photos of each child under 14 included in the permit.
- Size: The Polizia di Stato asks for the passport format without giving millimetres; the generator uses 35 x 45 mm, as for the passport.
