Austria driving licence photo requirements

Driving licence (Austria): 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo, head 30–36 mm from chin to crown.

For an Austrian driving licence you bring the photo yourself. What counts is the Foto-Mustertafel issued by the Interior Ministry together with the Climate Action Ministry, which is the one responsible for driving licences:

  • Portrait format, 35 × 45 mm
  • Head about 2/3 of the image, no more than 36 mm
  • Eye distance at least 8 mm, ideally 10 mm
  • No older than 6 months

  • By the theory test at the latest: The paperwork includes “one photo (portrait, 35 mm x 45 mm) in which the applicant is clearly recognisable”. You bring it with you — it is not taken at the office.
  • Following the passport-photo criteria: The portal asks for the photo “following passport photo criteria where possible”. Those criteria are the Foto-Mustertafel, summarised in the next section — meet them and there is nothing to reject.

Foto-Mustertafel: what the photo has to look like

Austrian driving licence photograph example
45 mm
35 mm
  • Source: Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior and Ministry for Climate Action
  • Size: The photo must be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. The head must be centred in the frame. The photo must not distort the head or alter it in any other way — no mirrored shots and no changed proportions.
  • Head size: The head, from the tip of the chin to the crown, should take up about 2/3 of the image but must not be taller than 36 mm. Tall hairstyles may run out of the frame. The distance from the centre of the left eye to the centre of the right is at least 8 mm, ideally 10 mm.
  • Head position and expression: The photo must show the person with a neutral expression and a closed mouth, facing the camera. The classic portrait pose — a half profile, or shoulders turned towards the camera — is not allowed.
  • Eyes and gaze: The person must look straight into the camera. The eyes must be open and clearly visible. Eyes, nose and mouth must not be covered by hair.
  • Glasses: The eyes must be clear and clearly visible. Reflections on the lenses, tinted lenses and sunglasses are not permitted. The rim of the lenses or the frame must not cover the eyes.
  • Head covering: Head coverings are not allowed, though exceptions are permitted on religious grounds. In that case the face must be recognisable from the lower edge of the chin to the forehead, and no shadows may fall on the face.
  • Lighting: The face must be evenly lit so that every detail reads clearly. Reflections and shadows on the face are to be avoided, as is a picture that is too bright or too dark.
  • Background: The background must be a plain light colour — ideally grey — with enough contrast to the face and hair. Light hair suits a mid-grey background, dark hair a light grey one. The background must carry no pattern.
  • Sharpness and print quality: The face must be sharp, well contrasted and clear throughout. The photo should be printed at high resolution on high-quality, glossy, smooth paper with no surface texture, and must carry no scratches, stains, stamp marks or creases. Colours should be natural, with no red eye.
  • Children: A child must appear alone in the photo. The face must be fully visible and the eyes open.
