In Peru the authorities usually take the photo themselves: Reniec photographs DNI applicants for free, and Migraciones takes the passport photo at the appointment. A printed photo is still needed in a few cases:

  • DNI (national identity document)
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Foreigner's card (carné de extranjería)
  • Driving licence

  • Who takes the photo: Reniec takes it for free at its service centres equipped for photo capture (captura en vivo), for children from 8 months of age as well.
  • When you bring one: For a baby under 8 months, to update the photo of a child under 7, and at a centre without photo capture. The photo: passport size, in colour, on a white background, on non-porous paper, without a frame, from the front, without glasses or retouching, not smiling, with the face and ears uncovered and no head covering except a religious one.
  • At a consulate abroad: Peruvians abroad renew the DNI at a consulate and bring the photo. The Foreign Ministry's page for the Consulate General in Iquique gives the passport size as 35 x 43 mm, in colour, on a white background, from the front at mid-chest height. Other consulates set their own: Washington asks for 2 x 2 inches, taken no more than 15 days earlier.
  • The generator makes the 35 x 43 mm size; check your consulate's page if it names another.

  • Who takes the photo: Migraciones takes it at your appointment, for adults and children alike, so you do not bring one. Migraciones also reminds applicants that the printed photos sold outside its offices are not needed.
  • Rules for the photo: It follows international biometric standards: no large glasses, frames or lenses that hide the eyes, no coloured cosmetic contact lenses, no head coverings, hats, fringe or hair over the face, and no facial piercings.

  • Who needs it: Foreigners whose country requires a visa apply at a Peruvian consulate; citizens of some Latin American and European countries do not need one. The application is registered online in e-SAMI with the documents attached.
  • Size: The Costa Rica consular section asks for one colour photo, passport size 3.5 x 4.5 cm, non-porous, without retouching, on a white background, from the front, with the face uncovered, without glasses, not smiling and with no head covering except for religious reasons.
  • Consulates word it differently — Madrid simply asks for one colour passport-size photo — so check your consulate's page.

  • Exchanging a foreign licence: One passport-size photo, without glasses and with a white background, together with a medical certificate, a certificate of authenticity of your licence and a copy of your CPP or carné de extranjería. Foreigners may drive on their own licence only for the first six months.
  • Size: The MTC gives no size in millimetres; the generator uses the 35 x 43 mm that Peru's consular DNI page gives for passport size.
  • Taking the tests in Peru: For foreigners who take the knowledge and driving tests in Peru, the MTC's list of requirements includes no photo.
